Samuel Gay Morse was born in Santa Cruz, California in 1859 and his family moved to Port Angeles, Washington when he was an infant. From 1892 to 1894, Morse was sheriff of Clallum County; later he served as an Indian agent for the Makah Indians at Neah Bay. The bulk of his photographs were made during this six-year period.
